Alpacas belong to the camelid family, and are native to the High Andes of Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Unlike the Llama, which South American civilisations used as a pack animal, the alpaca was bred for its fine wool and for textile production. Alpacas have provided the inhabitants of the Andes with soft yet robust fibres for thousands of years, inspiring a rich tradition of spinning, dyeing and weaving that remains highly prized to this day.
